What is HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate)

HSC Exam is an intermediate or 10th+2 level exam. The HSC exam is conducted at the state level. In India, HSC is known as the 12th class examination, which is conducted at the state level by state boards of education (Maharashtra Board, Madhya Pradesh Board, Bihar Board and many others) and at the national level by the Central Board.

On passing this exam, the student gets the Higher Secondary Certificate.  This certificate is obtained after passing the 12th class examination.

HSC is a state level examination conducted by the Boards of Secondary Education in various Indian states. The Full Form of HSC is “Higher Secondary Certificate“. This certificate is given to the students after the last stage of higher secondary education.

Higher Secondary Certificate Exam is conducted for the students studying in Intermediate 10+2 class of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Punjab states of India.

This exam is known by different names in different states. Here are a few examples :

In the state of Maharashtra, it is known as “HSC”, under the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE).

In the state of Gujarat, it is known as “HSC”, under the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB).

In the state of Tamil Nadu, it is known as “HSC”, under the Tamil Nadu State Board of Secondary Education.

 In other Indian states, it may be known as Higher Secondary Examination, Intermediate Examination or Senior Secondary Examination.

HSC exam is conducted in various subjects like Science, Commerce and Arts and on passing it students are given Higher Secondary Certificate.  This certificate is considered essential for further studies and jobs

In other countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, lakhs of students appear in the HSC Exams every year.  HSC is a public examination in India taken primarily by intermediate college students from the states of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Punjab.

Apart from this, in western countries outside India, HSC is equivalent to JCE AS level in England and third and fourth years of high school in America.

Using this Higher Secondary Certificate, a student can take admission in educational institutions for higher education courses.

In simple words, the way CBSE or the Board of Secondary Education of different states conducts senior secondary examination for class 12th, similarly in states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, students of class 12th or intermediate level  Higher Secondary Certificate Exam (HSC Exam) is organized for.

Like Intermediate Colleges which are affiliated to Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Pune, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts HSC Exam for 10+2 / Intermediate level students studying in those Intermediate Colleges.

Similarly, in other states, the HSC exam is organized by different education boards for the students studying in Intermediate Colleges of those states.
