TET – Teacher Eligibility Test – This is a kind of exam after clearing which you get a certificate that now you are ready to become a teacher.

It is an entrance exam which is conducted in various states (for recruitment of teachers in government schools).  TET is conducted by both the Central Government and the State Government.  If the TET exam is conducted by the central government, then it is called CTET, if the same is conducted by a state, then it is named according to the name of the state, such as UPTET for Uttar Pradesh and MPTET for Madhya Pradesh etc.

  • TET is an important exam for recruitment to the posts of government teachers.
  • Based on the guidelines issued by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE – National Council for Teacher Education), this examination is conducted at both the central and state level.
  • TET is organized at the national level by CBSE i.e. Central Board of Secondary Education.
  •  At the same time, this examination is also organized by the Professional Examination Board of the state.

The CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) exam organized by the Central Government is held twice a year.  This exam is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).  After clearing this exam, one can become a teacher in central government schools like Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).

STET (State Teacher Eligibility Test) is held at the state level, all the states conduct different exams for it, such as UPTET for UP, BIHAR TET for Bihar, Rajasthan TET for Rajasthan etc.  Whichever state you qualify TET, you can become a teacher only in that state.  Whereas after qualifying CTET one can become a teacher anywhere in the country.

STET exam is also similar to CTET, but the only difference is that this exam is conducted by the state government.  Many state government conduct TET exam every year like UPTET by Uttar Pradesh state government, RTET by Rajasthan state government, Bihar STET by Bihar state government, PSTET by Punjab state government, MPTET by Madhya Pradesh state government, KTET by Karnataka state government,  TNTET and so on by Tamil Nadu State Govt.

After clearing the TET exam of these states, candidates become eligible for teaching jobs only in schools run by the respective state governments.

  • Both TET and CTET are a common test through which teachers are appointed in different government schools. Means the candidate who passes this eligibility test becomes eligible to become a government teacher.
  •  After clearing the TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) exam, candidates can apply to become a teacher in any government school to teach students from class 1 to class 8.
  •  TET exam is conducted by the Professional Examination Board of every state.
  •  On passing this exam, the candidate is given the Eligibility Certificate for appointment as a primary teacher for classes 1 to 5 and the Eligibility Certificate for appointment as an upper primary teacher for classes 6-8.

What is the eligibility for TET and CTET?

There are 2 papers in TET exam.  Paper 1 is for the primary stage for teaching students from class 1 to 5.

 And paper 2 is of upper primary stage for teaching students from class VI to VIII.

 Slightly different qualifications are sought from the candidates for these two different papers.

 Talking about the eligibility required to appear in this exam, the eligibility criteria for TET may differ from state to state, it is determined by the state government at the state level.

 However, the basic criteria remain almost the same for all state TET exams. 

Essential Qualification for TET Paper 1

Candidates who clear this paper can become primary teachers from class 1 to 5.

Required Qualifications

  • The candidate must have passed 12th and must have secured at least 50% marks in class 12th.
  •  Along with this, the candidate should have done two years Diploma in Elementary Education.
  •  The candidate must have passed Graduation or B.Ed or must be appearing in the final year of the same.

Age Qualification 

General Category candidates age should be 18 to 35 years.  Age relaxation of 3 years for backward class, 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 10 years for Handicapped candidates is given.

Essential Qualification for TET Paper 2

  • The candidate must have passed 12th and must have secured at least 50% marks in class 12th.
  •  D.El.Ed Course must be cleared with at least 50% marks.
  •  Candidate must have completed graduation and also must have completed B.Ed or appearing in final year of B.Ed.

Age Qualification 

General Category candidates age should be 18 to 35 years.  Age relaxation of 3 years for backward class, 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 10 years for Handicapped candidates is given.

 After passing this, candidates can become teachers from 6th to 8th class.

 According to the papers of both the different classes, the syllabus etc. of the TET exam also remains the same.

How many years are TET Certificate Validity?

There is also a doubt in the mind of the candidates that after all how many years is the validity of TET Certificate?  Important information regarding this is being shared below.

 Explain that the validity of the certificate of Teacher Eligibility Test ie TET (TET Certificate Validity) remains lifelong.  Earlier it used to be of 7 years, but later it was increased to lifetime by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).  After which all the candidates who have passed the TET exam including CTET can apply for lifelong teacher job through certificate.

History of TET

  • TET exam was started by the Indian government in 2011 to improve the standard of teaching. In this, the already appointed teachers were asked to clear the exam within 2 years.
  •  Commencement of CTET (Central Government Teacher Eligibility Test) Received notifications dated 23 August 2010 and 29 July 2011 from the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) prescribing the minimum qualifications for eligibility as per the provisions of sub-section 1 of section 23 of the RTI Act It happened after
  •  It is necessary to clear the TET exam as per NCTE for the appointment of teacher in any school covered under section 2(n) of Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTI) for class 1 to 8 children.
  •  National Human Resource Development Ministry asked CBSE Delhi to conduct CTET exam. This organization conducts CTET exam twice a year. CTET exam is conducted in 20 Indian languages. And every time around 14 lakh candidates apply for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) exam.

Exam Pattern of Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)

TET Exam is of total 150 marks. Its question paper is divided into five sections.  Each section has 30 questions, totaling 150 questions. All questions are of objective type.  Each question carries 1 mark. There is no negative marking in this. Paper 1st and Paper 2nd have questions from different subjects.
