History of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)

Although it is said that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad was established in 1948. It was the brainchild of RSS activist Balraj Madhok But its formal registration took place on 9 July 1949. Professor Yashwantrao Kelkar of Bombay University became its chief organizer in 1958. Professor Yashwantrao Kelkar is said to be the main face behind the formation of this organization.

Shri Madan Das Devi ji, being the organization minister, created an organization in the whole country. After this Prof. Bal Apte joined them and the Parishad got more strength. In 1974 Prof. Bal Apte was elected the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, under his guidance the council spread across the country. This period is also known as the golden age of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took part in the JP movement of 1970. Its students’ movement in Gujarat and Bihar attracted the attention of the people, which helped the organization to flourish. Its students also actively participated in the Mandal movement in the nineties. In the campaign for the construction of the temple in Ayodhya, its students contributed in mobilizing the people.

In 1974, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had 1 lakh 60 thousand members in 790 college campuses across the country. Gradually, this organization captured the student organization of many universities of the country. In the 1983 Delhi University elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the elections there for the first time. By the time the nineties came, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had 3 lakh members.

In 2003, where the membership of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) was 11 lakhs, after the formation of the NDA government at the Center in 2014, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) made major preparations for its expansion, which increased to 32 lakhs in 2017. Today it is considered the largest student organization in the world.

To connect students with social work, they have run the “Students for Service” program, under which student groups are motivated to adopt slums and other backward areas.

“Students Experience in Inter-State Living (SEIL)” is one of the oldest programs to have made inroads in the Northeast and helped integrate students. This program was started in 1965-66 and it encourages travel of students from the North East to states in other parts of the country as well as travel from other states to the North East. During these visits, the students are put up at the local Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad workers’ place, where they are treated not as guests, but as family members. Shri Padmanabha Acharya, who later became the Governor of Nagaland (2014-19), was instrumental in conceptualizing this flagship programme.

The World Students Youth Organization (WOSY) was formed in the year 1985 and aims to provide a proper platform to the students of the world. The council collected Rs 28.64 crore for the “PM Cares Fund”, distributed over 58 lakh masks, 30 lakh food packets and 31.7 lakh ration kits among the people. It also helped transport more than 17,000 students, a large number of them from the North East and tribal areas, to their homes. During the lockdown, around 59,000 workers of the Council were active at the grassroots level and the organization operated 477 kitchens for more than 100 days.

In a one-of-a-kind initiative, on May 11-12, 56,000 workers called up 8.86 lakh students of the country to seek their opinion on the expectations from the government on various issues related to education, such as the issue of whether the examinations should be in-person or Online.
